First edition of the New York School poet's first regularly published book and winner of the 1956 Yale Series of Younger Poet's award. A fine copy in lightly used dustwrapper. This copy INSCRIBED to artist R. B. Kitaj (and with Kitaj's handwritten signature to front endpaper). A wonderful association copy. Ashbery later wrote on Kitaj's work and Kitaj contributed artwork to Ashbery's Arion Press book Self Portrait In A Convex Mirror.

Octavo. Illustrated with drawings by Joe Brainard. This is the publisher's copy, signed on the colophon page by poet and artist and bound in the deluxe edition of 26 copies, each with an original full-page pen and ink drawing by Brainard. The drawing in this copy is an especially nice composition of toothpaste tube and brush. Laid in to this copy is a 5 x 7" photograph of Ashbery and Brainard (taken by David Kermani). A fine copy in acetate wrapper with one tiny chip.
