First edition. A critical survey of the film arts focusing on the subversive aspects of various forms and methods including an in-depth look at Nazi propoganda, early Soviet-Russian avant garde, expressionism, surrealism and counterculture. A very good clothbound book with a small patch of staining to foredge else very good in very good unclipped dustwrapper. Book contains over 300 rare film stills. Laid into this copy is a one page Typed Letter Signed by Vogel and addressed to New Yorker critic Brendan Gill. In it, Vogel implores Gill to give this book serious attention and to review it for The New Yorker Magazine.

First edition, second state of the author's first book. His only novel and one of the truly memorable works produced on the First World War. A near fine copy in original dustwrapper. Offsetting to endpapers, else a tight, clean copy in brown cloth. The extremely fragile dustwrapper has a few small chips at edges, front flap fold split about half its length, spine panel evenly darkened. Despite these flaws, one of the best examples of the rare original dustwrapper that we have seen. Most copies of this book, where the jacket is present at all, are either in pieces or have been heavily restored. Comes in custom made clamshell box.
