Stuttgart, London and Reykjavik: Edition Hansjorg Mayer, 1973. First edition. Paperback. Sold here together are the first two books in Roth's "The Sea of Tears" series of artist books. Both were published in 1973. Both are limted to 200 SIGNED copies. Volume 1 is 528 pages, letterpress. Described in Dobke's Dieter Roth Books + Multiples pg 212 and 213 as "stitched, wrapper, in special package, printed by Prentsmidja Jons Helgasonar, Reykjavik. Volume 2 is 528 pp. Volume 1 is printed on rectos only and consists of one-line poems (in German). Volume 2 has images on the facing page and one line poems on the rectos. Both volumes have two features which make these books, already rare, even more special. Both come with special glued on belly bands which are often not found with these books. Both of these books have the tell-tale circular drill holes that run through the entirety of the pages. Roth drew metal chains through these holes and hung the books from the ceiling at an exhibition in providence in 1986 at the Rhode Island School of Design (see photo).
