Princeton: Princeton University Press, . First edition thus Three royal octavo volumes in dustwrappers. Considered a text of central importance to the Chinese literary tradition, the Wen xuan was compiled by Xiao Tong (501 - 531) and is the oldest surviving anthology of Chinese literature arranged by genre. All three volumes have been translated and annotated with an introduction by David R. Knechtges. Volume One Rhapsodies on Metropolises and Capitals [627 pp]; Volume Two Rhapsodies on Sacrifices, Hunting, Travel, Sightseeing, Palaces and Halls, Rivers and Seas [ 404 pp]; and Volume Three Rhapsodies on Natural Phenomena, Birds and Animals, Aspirations and Feelings, Sorrowful Laments, Literature, Music and Passions [449 pp}. All three volumes in uniform fine condition in green and oatmeal cloth bindings in near fine unclipped dustwrappers. Sold together as a three volume set.
